Definition
of CFS:
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a devastating chronic disease that affects the brain and
central nervous system, causing wide spread pain and inflammation. There is severe,
disabling fatigue with exhaustion that may require bed rest for months but the disease can
go on for years in a relapsing, viral-like pattern. It is known also as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis
(M.E.), Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction (CFIDS), and may include Multiple Chemical
Sensitivity (MCS), Gulf War Syndrome (GWS), Fibromyalgia (FMS), Environmental Illness and
Neurasthenia. Neurasthenia, meaning "weakness," is the old name for CFS.
My own story
- "I caught Glandular Fever, or the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) in 1986. I did not
listen to my body telling me to slow down, and after continuing with my hectic media
career, the periods of tiredness gradually got worse. After ten years I began
to suffer badly from fatigue and finally began to slow down, but still did not understand
the nature of the disease.
The ultimate
crunch came with a relationship break up in 1998 which left me incapacitated - literally
asleep for four months (16 hours a day), followed by another eight months of being
incapable of work or normal social activity.
During this
time, I began this website to contain my own research on EBV - gained on the internet, by
attending lectures and workshops, and by listening to advice given by by both natural and
mainstream medical practitioners.
Over the past
eighteen months I've seen the best and worst of the medical profession - a GP who, after a
year of referring me for tests, finally declared that he doesn't believe Chronic Fatigue
exists ("its a ploy to cop out", he said); a Phoney Doctor (PhD) developing his
multi-level marketing vitamin downline; and a quack who wired me up to receive some sort
of rays from the heavens, which he claimed would cure me!
So, what is
the truth about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome? Good question - all I can offer is the
resources that I have found in my research. I do know that I can manage the
symptoms, and have learned to identify those triggers which set the condition off again,
namely, stress, poor diet and partying - like asthma or diabetes, it is manageable.
I hope this
site helps. Thanks!
